• Connecticut is one state where coronavirus cases are declining in the US, which also makes it attractive as a socially distant vacation destination.
  • Connecticut is popular for its charming seaside towns, lush greenery, quaint enclaves, and bustling cities.

From sunkissed shoreline towns dotted with lobster roll stands, to woodsy enclaves tucked amid rolling greenery, and small cities ripe with boutique attractions, Connecticut is one of New England’s brightest gems.

Of course, I’m slightly biased. I did grow up here in a small town facing the Long Island Sound. Though, you don’t have to be a local to appreciate Connecticut’s varied offerings, which include lush state parks, sandy beaches, picturesque lakes, charming towns, and even high-end gambling. From leaf peeping and hiking in the fall and winter to sunny beaches and fresh seafood in the summer, Connecticut is a year-round delight.

Its appeal draws both New Yorkers and Bostonians in rare unity, and quaint towns rarely feel overrun. Though, expect to encounter your fair share of I-95 traffic if you visit in the summer (it’s serious).

Fewer crowds also mean that the wide-open outdoor spaces and activities are conducive to social distancing. Now that the state has reopened following the novel coronavirus, many attractive and affordable Connecticut Airbnbs have opened up their booking calendars.

And if you're wondering if travel is safe, experts say Airbnb is one of the safer places to stay, because you are often booking an entire home protected from interaction with others. However, without a vaccine, there is no firm guarantee with regard to safety. It's crucial to follow guidelines and advice from organizations such as the CDC and WHO, and practice safety measures including wearing a mask, washing your hands, and maintaining social distancing. Additionally, consider your own level of risk, and whether you're traveling from or to a hotspot, so as not to increase the rate of infection.

Airbnb also announced rigorous new procedures including the Enhanced Cleaning Protocol, which includes guidelines on personal protective equipment for hosts or cleaners, as well as only using disinfectants approved by regulatory authorities. These listings maintain a 24-waiting period after a guest checks out before entering to clean, followed by another 24-hour waiting period before guests check-in. As an alternative, a Booking Buffer enforces a 72-hour vacancy period between stays. Or, hosts can choose to do neither, in which case, it's important to remember that cleaning practices vary, where everything from kitchen utensils to bed linens were used by previous guests.

No matter the policy, it's worth taking extra preventative measures such as running dishware through the dishwasher and using a disinfecting wipe over all flat surfaces and high-touch areas.

Yet vacation rentals do offer an attractive, private getaway. Connecticut, in particular, is easily accessible from most East Coast cities and is about halfway between both New York City and Boston.

The following list of Connecticut Airbnbs are well-reviewed, thoughtfully-designed, and comfortable whether you're seeking to make it your WFH base, a weekend escape, or vacation at any time of the year, chosen based on the following criteria:

  1. Airbnb listings are for the entire home.
  2. The home is priced under $270 per night, is highly-rated, and holds a review score of 4.8 or higher.
  3. Homes are exceptionally designed and located in towns and cities renowned for their beaches, scenery, outdoor activities, and attractions.

While we made an effort to keep nightly prices under $200, it's important to note that additional costs vary based on the host, and can include cleaning or facility fees, if applicable, which may be increased as a result of COVID-19. Also, be aware of cancelation policies and read the fine print, as some homes are quite strict, regardless of the pandemic, and Connecticut currently has firm quarantine rules in place for those arriving from hotspot states.

Traveling elsewhere in the Northeast?

These are some of the best Airbnbs in Connecticut, sorted by price from low to high.

With stone walls, vintage frames, and farmhouse-inspired decor, this whimsical cottage feels plucked from a fairy tale. In reality, it's tucked in the Connecticut countryside. Today, the interiors have been completely modernized to include newly sanded "pumpkin pine" floors and over 1,000 square feet of living space with original bath fixtures from the '30s, an impressive fireplace, and two bedrooms furnished from the owner's own business.

Outside, find an herb and flower garden, an exterior patio covered by an awning and solar twinkle lights, plus a fire pit. There is no TV or kitchen, however, there is a small coffee area, a few electric appliances, and a retro Frigidaire refrigerator filled with cold drinks.

Book this luxurious barn starting at $178 per night

With rich velvet furnishings, vibrant art, and immaculate grounds, this four-bedroom restored barn makes for a glam family or group getaway.

Everything about the design is purposeful, mixing modern conveniences with the rustic charm you'd expect from a converted barn that dates back to the 1900s. Set on one acre of wooded land with a babbling brook, this home boasts reclaimed furnishings, soaring ceilings, exposed wooden beams, and even a grand piano, all soaked by light streaming through multiple windows.

Cozy storybook castle in Ellington, $182

Foto: Source: Airbnb

Book this castle starting at $182 per night

Many Airbnbs claim to feel like a storybook castle, but few actually are. Here's a rare opportunity to stay in one, in Ellington, Connecticut. Built in 1917 on seven acres, this home was originally created by a wealthy family inspired by a trip to England, who always wanted to own a castle.

In early 2000, an artist purchased the castle and dedicated five years to refurbishing it, while leaving many thoughtful touches - the porch is even guarded by a medieval knight.

A grand entranceway leads to interiors merging English sensibility with country-inspired decor. As with any castle, there are multiple bedrooms and each has a distinct theme. A majestically regal room feels fit for a king with elegant crimson furnishings, while a jungle room mixes animal prints with statement pieces, and the "Romeo and Juliet" bedroom feels quaint and romantic. Wander the castle's grounds, which include gardens, a pond gazebo, and a pergola, all set under the watchful eye of gargoyles. When winter's chill sets in, gather around the living room fireplace and serve tea on an elegant platter from the full kitchen.

This castle is currently available for bookings throughout the fall and early winter.

Book this modern home starting at $204 per night

I grew up next to Guilford and can vouch for it's sweet New England charm with a picturesque Town Green surrounded by lovely boutiques, great dining, and historic appeal. The sandy beach is a draw in summer, while ample hiking trails and foliage make fall a worthy time to visit, too.

This contemporary Airbnb Plus home ensconced in nature offers the seclusion to unwind with all the conveniences and comforts of a luxury stay. Guest house with a pool in Trumbull, $225

Foto: Source: Airbnb

Book this guest house with a pool starting at $225 per night

Skip a crowded resort pool and opt for this guest house that comes with full use of a private pool set right outside its French doors.

The home itself is a guest house that is part of a larger estate, however, it's located far enough away from the main house to feel private. The fenced-in pool is certainly the main draw, flanked by vintage furniture from the '40s, multiple gardens (feel free to pick some cherries), and balustrades at the wall that are actually sourced from the Bronx Zoo.

Inside is equally enticing, with a design that blends country and midcentury style including vibrant fabrics in the Queen-sized bedroom, a well-stocked kitchenette, and a Carrera marble bathroom with a huge walk-in rainfall shower. The hosts write that the concept for the sun-filled design all started with the red metal fireplace that serves as the focal point, and the entire house was essentially built around it.

While you're sunbathing or wandering the gardens, keep an eye on the cupola atop the roof, which is a nod to the hosts' dear departed dog, Jed. A hand-hammered copper weathervane with a 24-carat gold collar is engraved with the pet's name. It's hard to see, but a prime example of all the small details woven throughout the home.

The best availability begins in mid-September.

Nautical-themed getaway in Mystic, $259

Book this nautical-themed home starting at $259 per night

If your vision of Connecticut is made up of images of ancient ships docked in a seaside village, or simply led by one pizza joint made famous by a certain Julia Roberts movie, you're likely thinking of Mystic.

Everything feels positively New England from the nautical-inspired beige and blue furnishings to bedrooms dubbed "Captain's Cabin," "First Mate's Cabin," and "Crew Quarters."

But the look is far from full-on seafarer. Rather, everything feels new and modern, including a zen-like bathroom, farmhouse kitchen, and open floor plan.
